LETTER FROM THE

Principal

Vryburg High School is a parallel medium school which prides itself in creating the best possible environment for our learners to achieve their potential. Our motto “Carpe Diem”, which means “grab the opportunity”, is the beacon that has inspired the vision of the school since 1881, the year in which this school was established. As one of the top twenty oldest schools in the country our traditions have evolved over the years to make Vryburg High School one of the best performing public schools in the country.

Our values and norms are dynamic but remain deeply rooted in Christian principles. We value our learners, as unique individuals but also as a collective. We therefore do not cater only for the academic and extracurricular needs of our learners, but we also provide them with moral support and spiritual guidance. At VHS we put emphasis on the management of discipline as a pre-requisite for effective learning and teaching. Regular feedback from Institutions of higher learning indicates that our learners display the discipline we have instilled in them even beyond the schooling phase.

We have a broad and balanced curriculum because we value the right to choose. Our curriculum is composed of the technical, commercial, science and hospitality streams. We offer no less than 20 learning areas in grade 10 to 12. Our overall academic performance has consistently been a matric pass rate of between 95 and 100% for many years.  This performance is driven by the dedication and commitment of our carefully selected staff, who continue to push the frontiers in inspirational teaching.

Sport and culture are a second religion at VHS. Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Soccer, Tennis and Golf are just some of the sport codes that our learners excel in, both at provincial and national level. Our partnership with parents who are expert coaches has seen VHS regularly achieving at the highest school sport levels in these sporting codes. We attach equal importance to the cultural activities, making these activities a tool with which to unlock our learners’ talents in the arts.  Artistically inclined learners are afforded to partake in, among others, chess, public speaking, choral music, musicals and traditional dance.

At VHS we ensure that the parent voice remains strong and constant, and we remain focused on our shared goal of giving our learners a more holistic education, based on our belief in not only academic excellence but also in the inculcation of moral values. I hope that this website will assist you to become acquainted with our school and make the right decision to enrol your child at VHS.

Carpe Diem
